Everybody is different and learn languages in different ways. In my case, I can tell you that I spent 3 years studying Japanese and only got to intermediate level. I got tired of it and finally made up my mind and traveled to Japan. I  learned so much by living there (inmersion) that I became proficient in the use of the language in half of the time. 

There are a couple of good Spanish programs in Mexico for inmersion...</description>
