Volunteering in Spain?

Liza asked:

Hey all,
I’d like to know if anyone has volunteered in Spain before, or know of any links I can go to to get any information on it. I’d like to volunteer anywhere from 3 months to a year. If there is anyone who has already done this could you possibly answer a few questions I have?:
What organization did you volunteer with?
How long did you go for?
How much money did you save to go there with?
Where did you stay?
Did you have free time or was it volunteering 24/7?
Did you live in another country and go to Spain to volunteer specifically?
Did the organization offer Spanish lessons?
Did you work with a big or small group?
What kind of activities did you do while volunteering?

I volunteer as a translator, I help people who don’t speak Spanish when they have to go to the doctor or things like that. I also volunteer at the local animal shelter. That’s the kind of things we do here.

I know some people volunteer doing things like teaching children from poorer families (some kind of private tutors in any subject, from maths to Spanish, from history to English). But again it’s something done by people who live here.

But I don’t think people move here to volunteer, it’s not like we are a developing country. Despite the tough financial crisis, this is still Western Europe.

As for the other poster, in Spain it’s illegal to work if you’re under 16 so I wonder what kind organisation he’s into, but it sounds most suspicious. Working for free as a teacher of English at the age of 15? I’d love to let the authorities know if I knew who arranges that.

A few weeks ago a poster said he’d be volunteering in farms here. It sounds like a real scam to me. People here WORK in farms, someone doing it for free is obviously being kind of cheated (work for food and shelter is illegal in this country) and the web site for that was only in English, which was also kind of suspicious.
