When I was learning Spanish,?

José Valkyre asked:

I found this website that had information about certain preterite verbs that I was never taught. As I grew older, I just tried to accept that this was correct and never asked anyone. I was one of the few members of my family that learned Spanish through a classroom. Do these verbs really change their meaning in the preterite? I’m not asking about tense, but I am asking about these verbs that change their meetings. EX: Conocer becomes “to meet” in the preterite. Is that true? Does Querer and Poder and the other ones change meetings too? Check the site, please, for what I am talking about.

Is this question so hard? O_O It’s a yes or no answer!!!

In the preterite, based on what the website told me, do these verbs change meanings?

VERB = Preterite Meaning (Present Meaning)
Conocer = to meet (to know)
Querer = to try (to want)
No Querer = to refuse (to not want)
Saber = to find out (to know)
Poder = to succeeded (to be able [to])
Tener = to receive, to get (to have)

Affective methods of learning spanish for intermediate beginners?

Mark asked:

I studied spanish for a few years in high school and took 2 or 3 classes in college. I have also completed the first 3 lessons of Rosetta Stone and am now wondering what to do next because I am far from fluent. Are there any good books or other methods that can help me expand my knowledge of the language? I dont want to go back to school yet and moving to a spanish speaking region is not an option…
